What is an IP Rating?

How do I decode the IP Ratings on rugged device descriptions?

What is an IP rating you may ask?

When it comes to certain products, they have an IP rating (e.g., IP65).   This is known as Ingress Protection. The two numbers have a meaning.

The first number represents its toughness against other solid materials such dust.

The second number represents its protection against water ingress.

Usually, an IP rating of IP65 or IP66 is more than enough for most workplaces.  The devices are protected from dust getting inside and can easily be sprayed and wiped down with disinfectant (as per the supplier’s guidelines).
